This turned out to be a hearth fire not infrequent even in my early days as a fireman.

The routine involved lifting the floor boards, uncovering the extent of the fire and before leaving, trimming the joists under the hearth so that when reconstructed the heat of the fire did not again set fire to the heath timbers.
A detail now covered by the building regulation.
